Board recommends Sara Crawford as interim treasurer and authorizes writ for special election

The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors recommended Sara Crawford to the circuit court judge for appointment as Interim Treasurer and authorized the county attorney to petition the court for a writ of special election to fill the treasurer vacancy on Nov. 3, 2026.

Sara Crawford addressed the board during the Oct. 8 meeting as the sole applicant for the interim treasurer post. Crawford said she currently serves as Town Manager for Charlotte Court House and previously served seven years as Deputy Treasurer of Daily Operations; she holds Master Deputy Treasurer and Governmental Treasurer certifications. The board then convened a closed session under Virginia Code §2.2‑3711(A)(1) to discuss candidates for appointment.

After returning to open session and certifying the closed meeting, Vice‑Chair Hazel Bowman Smith moved to recommend Sara Crawford to Judge Morrison for appointment as Interim Treasurer; the motion carried on a roll call vote with all supervisors recorded as voting yes. The board also approved a resolution authorizing County Attorney Slayton to petition the Circuit Court to issue a writ for a special election to fill the vacancy and requested that the special election be held Nov. 3, 2026. That resolution cites Virginia Code §24.2‑228.1(A).

The recommendation and writ authorization will be forwarded to the Circuit Court and County Attorney for further proceedings.
