The Washington County Board of Commissioners on July 1 authorized county leadership to work with Washington County Schools (WCS) and Pocosin Charter School (PCS) leadership to address PCS’s facilities and funding questions.
Commissioner Carol V. Phelps introduced a letter from PCS; Lyn West attended for PCS but did not present due to late notice. Commissioner Tracey A. Johnson said the county does not have authority to provide teacher supplements to charter schools and argued that schools drawing students from multiple counties should share supplement costs. County Manager Curtis S. Potter said he would prefer to discuss the matter in closed session; Chair Ann C. Keyes suggested that Potter, WCS Superintendent Dr. White and PCS leadership meet to seek a resolution. Carlos Riddick, Board of Education chair, said PCS should build a school based on previous discussion.
Commissioner Phelps moved to authorize county leadership to work with WCS and PCS leadership to resolve the issue; Commissioner Spruill seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Ending: The board authorized interagency talks; no funding commitments or specific timelines were recorded in the minutes.
