Chase County Commissioners on May 14 approved plans and specifications for an asphalt overlay of Dump Road and set a timetable for the project, with final completion required between Sept. 1 and Sept. 15, 2024. Highway Superintendent Toney Krajewski told commissioners the work will include a leveling course, asphalt overlay and final course, with only minimal patching of the existing roadway and no full tear-up; county crews will perform the shouldering work after the overlay is finished.
The board voted to advertise for bids on the Dump Road project, with bids to be opened June 11 at 9:00 a.m. Commissioner Billie Muehlenkamp moved to approve the plans as presented; Commissioner Kurt Bernhardt seconded the motion and the vote carried unanimously (Muehlenkamp—yes; Brown—yes; Bernhardt—yes).
Also on the highway agenda, the commissioners approved a purchase of a reclaimer for the Wauneta shop from Murphy Tractor & Equipment for $22,240. Jordan Gardner of Murphy Tractor explained the machine is a specialty item available through the vendor; the board approved the purchase on a motion from Chairman Jacci Brown, seconded by Commissioner Muehlenkamp (vote recorded unanimous).
Assistant Highway Superintendent Dick DeWester presented a final list of seven rural road segments proposed for reclassification to minimum-maintenance status. The board set a public hearing on those proposed reclassifications for May 28 at 9:00 a.m. to hear testimony for or against the change. The listed segments include portions of 745 Road/321 Avenue; 746 Road/321 Avenue; 320 Avenue/736 Road; 323 Avenue/736 Road; 740 Road/326 Avenue; 727 Road/344 Avenue; and 727 Road/345 Avenue.
The actions approve procurement steps and a public hearing; the Dump Road specifications require the contractor to complete the work within the stated September window and do not include shouldering, which the county will perform following overlay completion. The meeting record shows all motions on these items carried unanimously.
The meeting also recorded routine approvals of claims and payroll and other business (see separate minutes entries).
