The Dorchester County Council nominated Victoria Jackson Stanley to serve a third and final term as the county's representative on the Chesapeake College Board of Trustees during its May 14 meeting.
Councilman Mike Detmer urged caution about any funding mandate tied to a new Technical Center, saying the Council had previously voted against that center and is concerned about mandatory county contributions. "I support the mission of Chesapeake College," Detmer said while stressing fiscal reservations about funding mandates.
Chesapeake College President Clifford Coppersmith told the Council the project was not funded this year and that college officials "continue to work with State agencies to reconfigure the plans and should know more by the summer." He also provided an update on the Cambridge Center and its benefits to Dorchester County and introduced college staff in attendance.
Victoria Jackson Stanley said education motivates her request for reappointment. Other Council members, including Ricky C. Travers and William V. Nichols, thanked the college for program offerings such as marine trades and noted the County's own career and technology center as part of the local workforce conversation.
The Council moved forward with the nomination; the minutes record the nomination and discussion but do not list a roll-call vote for the appointment in the published summary.
The college will continue outreach to county leaders as it seeks state-level decisions about the Technical Center; the Council asked to be kept informed as reconfiguration work proceeds.
