The Irwin County Board of Elections & Registrations on Sept. 9 outlined its schedule for staff certifications, poll-worker training and the voter-registration and absentee/early-voting calendar ahead of the Nov. 2025 statewide election. Supervisor Ethan Compton provided the timetable and logistics.
Compton said poll-worker training will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on both Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. He also said he will participate virtually in two CERA certification courses through October in coordination with Auburn University, and plans to attend a regional meeting in Valdosta on Sept. 10 with a possible Southeastern Georgia regional meeting on Sept. 17 depending on venue changes caused by staffing shortages in Bacon County. After the poll-worker training, Compton said he will travel to Atlanta to participate in a House Blue Ribbon Study Committee on Elections Processes session then planned for Covington on Oct. 2.
The board was briefed on deadlines that govern voter eligibility and absentee voting in the statewide contest. Compton said the deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration for the Nov. election is Oct. 6. Absentee-by-mail ballots can be accepted and processed before that date but cannot be mailed until Oct. 6. Because Oct. 13 is Columbus Day, a state holiday, early voting will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The deadline to apply for an absentee-by-mail ballot is Friday, Oct. 24. Compton also noted the board's next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 14 at 4 p.m., will be brief and timed not to interfere with poll closings on the first day of early voting.
Why it matters: The dates determine who can vote in November and set the schedule for the county’s preparation, including training poll workers and coordinating staff participation in regional and state-level briefings. Voters who miss the Oct. 6 registration deadline will not be eligible to vote in the Nov. contest, and absentee applications must be filed by Oct. 24.
The meeting recorded no public comment on these items and contained no formal motions tied to the training or calendar announcements.
