During the Oct. 8 meeting of the Screven County Board of Commissioners, several commissioners and staff thanked community members for their help during Hurricane Helene and described next steps for recovery and planning.
Commissioners Rosa Romeo and J.C. Warren expressed gratitude to residents and volunteers who assisted the county during the storm; Commissioner Allison Willis said the county could improve community notification systems. County Manager Lori Burke reported that a letter to extend the county’s Comprehensive Plan Update had been submitted and provided an update on the county’s response efforts to the storm.
Resident Alan Stewart suggested using fire stations as points of assistance after events like Hurricane Helene to help those in need. Rev. Uley Robbins announced that the Boys and Girls Club of Augusta would be at the Market on Maple on Oct. 9, 2024, to give away free hotdogs and hamburgers to the community.
