On Dec. 8 the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved a series of capital contracts, equipment purchases and operational plans.
Contracts and purchases approved included:
- A $25,900 proposal from Terracon for geotechnical drilling and testing at the Westside Park Community Center site (a 2024 SPLOST project). The work will determine depth to rock, water table elevation and identify unsuitable soils before final design.
- Purchase of cross drains from Old Castle for $106,633.38 to replace cross drains at 2436 and 2425 Crow Valley Road; Old Castle was the lowest responsive bid.
- Declaration of six older fire department vehicles as surplus to be auctioned on govdeals.com due to repair costs exceeding vehicle value.
- Approval of Symtech Fire's lone bid for a flashover simulator at $101,230 (50% down, 50% at completion) to be funded by approved 2024 SPLOST funding for firefighter training.
- Approval to purchase and install seven HVAC units for the detention center (equipment $116,634; installation $83,306; total $199,940) using SPLOST 2020 funds, citing age and repair difficulties with current units.
- Purchase of an additional commercial washing machine for the jail at $41,000 from Southeastern Laundry Equipment Sales LLC to reduce wear on older machines and provide redundancy.
The board also ratified a $26,550 award from the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust for drug testing supplies for the Conasauga Drug Treatment Court and adopted the Whitfield County Transit Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan to comply with FTA Part 673 requirements.
Why it matters: The combined approvals move several capital and safety projects forward: geotechnical work clears design risks for the Westside Park project, culvert replacement addresses infrastructure needs, fire training and detention facility equipment upgrades address safety and operations, and the opioid grant provides narrowly targeted support for drug-court testing supplies.
Next steps: Departments will execute contracts and schedule work; SPLOST and other funding sources will be used as recorded in meeting materials.
