The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Nov. 7 to set the county’s 2025 maintenance-and-operations millage rate at 4.6 mills following a public hearing in Dalton.
Chairman Jevin Jensen presented historical data during the hearing, saying the county’s millage rate fell from 9.56 mills in 2016 to 4.35 mills in 2024 and that healthcare expenditures have increased 187% since 2016. "Many are on fixed incomes and cannot afford an increase to their house payments," several citizens told the board during public comment, urging commissioners to cut spending before increasing taxes.
The board approved a resolution to set the M&O millage at 4.6 mills; the motion was made by Commissioner Greg Jones and seconded by Commissioner Barry W. Robbins. The board also recorded a special tax district rate of 3.041 after removing the Dalton Whitfield Library, the Dalton Whitfield Joint Development Authority and the Senior Center from that district. Chairman Jensen noted that Whitfield County Schools’ millage rate is 14.375.
Commissioners voted 4-0 to adopt the resolution, with Chairman Jevin Jensen and Commissioners Greg Jones, John Thomas and Barry W. Robbins in favor; Commissioner Robby Staten was listed as absent. Earlier in the meeting the board approved the agenda on a 3-0 vote, with Commissioners Jones, Thomas and Robbins recorded as voting in agreement.
The meeting was held at 201 S. Hamilton St., Dalton; Blanca Cardona, county clerk, signed the minutes. The board adjourned by unanimous consent after the vote.
