At its Oct. 14 meeting, Sumter County Council received committee reports and acted on recommendations from standing committees, forwarding a land-use study to the Planning Commission and approving personnel changes for emergency medical services.
Land Use Committee Chairman Charles T. Edens reported the committee voted unanimously to forward consideration of allowing recreational vehicle and boat storage as a conditional use in the Agricultural Conservation (AC) district to the Planning Commission; council approved forwarding the matter in open session without recorded opposition. The referral directs planning staff and the commission to examine whether and how conditional-use rules in the AC district should be adjusted.
Public Safety Committee Chairman Carlton B. Washington said the committee received an update from Emergency Management on savings achieved over the past six to eight months and on new equipment purchases, including ambulances and a fire station at Dabbs. The committee moved to approve EMS staffing changes; council carried the recommendation unanimously in open session. The minutes do not provide details of the staffing changes; the county administrator and committee will be responsible for implementation and any further public reporting.
During the County Administrator’s report, Gary Mixon recognized upcoming volunteer firefighter banquets and encouraged public attendance at committee meetings to observe preparatory work. In public comment, James E. McCoy urged the council to pave Cuz Road. Austin Floyd said he brought his sister, a Sumter High School senior, to see local government in action.
Council adjourned at 6:32 p.m.
