The Cavalier County Board of Commissioners on April 16 approved several finance and personnel items, including an increase to county liability insurance and the routine audit of claims.
On a motion by Commissioner Greg Goodman (seconded by Austin Lafrenz), the board approved raising the county’s liability insurance limit to $5,000,000 with an additional premium of $2,297.00. Ryan Bachman of Mostad Insurance advised the board that blanket property/equipment coverage under the NDIRF policy does not require an inventory but recommended the county maintain an inventory to ensure adequate coverage.
Road Foreman Sheldon Romfo and Sheriff Matt Wright, speaking for department heads, proposed a 4% salary increase for 2025 and asked the board to grant employees December 26, 2025 as a holiday. Commissioners agreed the requests were reasonable and asked that the items be placed on the next meeting agenda to provide budgeting direction.
Commissioner Nick Moser moved (seconded by Greg Goodman) to transfer $1,793.50 from the Road & Bridge Fund to the Road & Bridge Equipment Replacement Fund; the motion carried. The board also reviewed and approved the audit of claims (motion by Austin Lafrenz, seconded by Nick Moser). The printed claims list included vendors such as US Imaging Inc. ($15,000.00), NDSU Extension ($13,642.61), and KLJ Engineering LLC ($900.00) among numerous road, sheriff and general-fund items.
The minutes record motions as "carried" but do not show roll-call vote tallies. No additional budget authority or final adoption of the 2025 pay plan occurred at the meeting; the salary guidance was placed on a future agenda for budgeting direction.
