Burleson County Judge Keith Schroeder and the Commissioners Court on Jan. 22, 2024, approved a package of routine actions including resolutions to apply for public-safety grants, acceptance of procurement bids, subdivision and road-name approvals, interlocal agreements with school districts for school resource officers, and an early-voting schedule for a February election.
The court heard a Sheriff’s Office report from Chief Rios, who said the county jail housed 53 people — 48 men and five women — and that the department is recruiting, with several jailers starting at the academy. Elections staff reported that ballots were ordered, a logic-and-accuracy test is scheduled for Jan. 31, and training for elections staff will be held Feb. 2 and Feb. 10. Early voting is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 20, with weekday and weekend hours announced by elections staff.
On finance matters, the court approved the Treasurer’s monthly reports for October through December 2023 and the quarterly investment report for Q1 FY2024. The court also accepted two small donations: $530 for the Burleson County Health Resource Center and $20 for the Burleson County Child Welfare Board.
Several procurement and land-use items were approved. The court accepted a bid from Lauren Concrete for concrete rubble at $100 per load and a bid from Triple A Supply, LLC for DEF at $13.00 per 2.5-gallon container. A simplified plat for Ginzel Estates (four lots) and a subdivision exception for property owned by James Gloger on County Road 274 were approved. A private road name petition for Deloris Lane in Precinct 4 was authorized.
The court approved interlocal agreements for School Resource Officers with Caldwell ISD, the City of Caldwell and Snook ISD. The Sheriff’s Department was authorized to add a copier contract with UBEO Business Services at $75 per month, and overtime pay for dispatchers was approved. The court also approved a time warrant with Citizens State Bank for $850 at 7.65%.
On grants, the court approved resolutions to apply for three federal/state public-safety grant opportunities: the FY2024 ALERRT Travel Assistance grant (through the Office of the Governor), the FY2025 Project Safe Neighborhoods program (U.S. Department of Justice via the Office of the Governor), and the FY2025 District Attorney Testing of Forensic Evidence grant (Public Safety via the Office of the Governor). The court postponed action on accepting a FY2024 cardboard bailing continuation grant from H‑E‑B through Keep Texas Beautiful for $38,000.
Judge Schroeder reported county collections for the period: $7,957 for County Court misdemeanors and $18,644 for District Court felonies, and noted ongoing economic-development work with local schools and the City of Caldwell. After authorizing payment of bills, the court adjourned.
The court recorded no public forum comments during this meeting and took no executive session with legal counsel. All motions described in the minutes were approved by unanimous vote of the court.
