At the April 22 meeting, the Kelloggsville Board of Education’s Goals Committee provided an update on district mental-health supports and community outreach. Assistant Superintendent Eric Alcorn described ongoing monitoring of social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum, PBIS/PSC measures, restorative practices and the work of school counselors and mental-health clinicians across grade levels.
Alcorn said elementary counselors address topics including conflict resolution, grief for upper-elementary students, behavior expectations and resiliency in lower elementary classrooms. The district is tracking clinician caseloads and student contacts and continues to use Corewell Health’s Blue Envelope suicide-prevention program; staff training has been provided so all district staff can identify students exhibiting suicidal ideation. The committee also shared a short overview video about restorative practices and said the approach, coupled with discipline rubrics, aims to reduce suspensions.
The committee noted plans to update the district’s health and wellness web resources and to publish a spring Community Health & Wellness newsletter. The Goals Committee will provide its next update on May 6, 2024.
