The fiscal court gave first reading March 10 to the Greenup County jail budget for fiscal year 2026-27, set at $2,982,790.
Judge Bobby Hall framed the budget within broader statewide pressures on jails, saying, "the most difficult time in the history of Kentucky is taking place right now with our jail system. It's all but broken." He emphasized high and unpredictable costs, particularly for medication, feedings and maintenance.
Jailer Larry Pancake provided current population figures and revenue-related details; court members praised him for managing a tight budget and accepted his report by vote. The court approved the first reading of the jail budget by voice vote; this does not enact final appropriations and further readings or action may be required.
Officials flagged staffing shortages as a continuing operational challenge and noted that recent hires have improved staffing levels. The court approved a separate interfund transfer of $200,000 from general to the jail fund as part of the treasurer's amendments discussed at the meeting.
