Emergency Management Director Garth Wyman told the fiscal court that the county has reported $452,819 in damages from a Jan. 24 winter storm and has submitted documentation in support of a potential disaster declaration.
Wyman also said the county had secured grant funding from the health department to install two new warning sirens, one in Lloyd and one near South Shore/Greenup County High School and adjacent middle-school property. He said Kentucky Power has agreed to donate power poles for the installations and will perform the pole work; the county is coordinating 811 locates and expects poles to be set within about a week.
Wyman noted the county participated in a statewide tornado drill with successful activation of warning systems and urged residents to sign up for local alerts (instructions provided in the meeting record). He also described recent operational assistance including drone deployment for law enforcement and response to vehicle accidents.
The court accepted the emergency-management report by motion. Officials urged residents to monitor forecasts and use 911 or 311 to report downed trees depending on whether an emergency or power lines are involved.
