The Charles Mix County Board of Commissioners on March 14 approved routine financial reports, tax corrections and personnel actions and heard public comment about ballot‑counting procedures.
Chairman Keith Mushitz presided as the board approved the Auditor's Account with Treasurer for the month ending Feb. 29, 2024, reporting an ending balance of $7,134,431.83, and approved the Treasurer's report (beginning balance $6,682,810.70, total income $1,935,140.18, total expenses $1,483,519.05, ending balance $7,134,431.83). Commissioner Nick Stotz moved those approvals and Vice Chairman Colin Soukup seconded; minutes record unanimous approval.
The board approved three tax corrections (Corey Irwin; Suzanne Blue Star Boy; Danial & Kelly Cimpl Trust) on a motion by Stotz and second by Soukup. The commissioners also approved the 2023 annual report and the Register of Deeds statement of fees of $6,836.00.
During public comment Jeff Stewart and others told the commission they prefer hand counting ballots rather than using tabulating machines; the board took no action. Lori Cowman, Director of District III, provided an overview of local economic‑development activities; no action was taken.
Personnel actions included approval to hire Matthew Boelter as a crewman at $20.01 per hour effective Feb. 26, 2024, and approval for county staff to attend the 4‑H conference in Brookings. The board entered executive session at 11:48 a.m. to discuss personnel under SDCL 1‑25‑2 with State's Attorney Steve Cotton and Auditor Jason Gant present; the session ended at 12:07 p.m. with no action taken. The meeting adjourned at 12:08 p.m.; the board will meet next on March 28 at 10 a.m. at the courthouse.
