The Heard County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved two rezonings at its Feb. 15, 2022 meeting to correct a mapping error and to change a parcel’s zoning.
Chairman Lee Boone told the board the first rezoning corrects an error on the county’s original zoning map and noted the property had recently sold, saying “the map needed to be corrected.” On a motion by Commissioner David Walls and a second by Commissioner James Perry, the board approved rezoning a Hwy. 34 parcel from Industrial to Multi-Family Residential.
At a separate public hearing on a Hwy. 27 parcel, applicant Mike Crane told commissioners that rezoning the land to ELA would allow it to “maintain the rural character of the county as opposed to a ‘real’ subdivision.” Commissioner James Perry asked about the advantages of rezoning versus dividing the parcel as a traditional subdivision. Neighbors voiced opposition: Jerry Cook spoke against both public hearing items, and Mike Robinson said he opposed the Hwy. 27 rezoning though he would not object if only a single house were built. The board voted unanimously, on a motion by Larry Hammond and a second by David Walls, to approve the Hwy. 27 rezone.
No conditions or amendments to the rezones were recorded in the meeting minutes. The board closed both public hearings by unanimous vote before taking the approvals. The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
