The Madison County Board approved a resolution on Feb. 17 appointing Michael Bold as Director of the Facilities Management Department effective the same day, with an annual salary of $100,000. The motion passed by roll call, 20–7.
Board member Jack Minner objected, characterizing the hire as a political appointment and raising concerns about the candidate’s qualifications and the county’s recent legal costs connected to prior political hires. "This acts as a political hire to me... the last 3 political appointments we have had is costing us every month for legal fees and we haven’t even settled anything yet with them so I will have to vote no on this," Minner said.
Supporters pointed to internal recommendations and prior supervisors’ endorsements. Mick Madison referenced a letter of recommendation from a former director, Rob Schmidt, who had previously overseen county facilities operations and supported the appointment. County leadership noted that hiring decisions were made under the county's personnel policies and that the position carries standard board-appointed department-head terms.
The board approved the resolution, which fixes the salary, states the appointment continues at the pleasure of the county board chairman and board, and directs the new appointee to indicate acceptance by signing the resolution.
