Mount Pleasant officials heard a detailed presentation from Mackenzie of UNS on local participation in the UNS Smart Energy Program and available customer rebates.
Mackenzie explained that Mount Pleasant pays an annual contribution (about $5,300) into the program and that the funds are broken into quarterly rebate payouts to eligible customers. "Mount Pleasant's is about $5,300 a year," she said while walking the council through program mechanics and examples of participation.
The presentation described four core programs: a Home Energy Savings Program that covers certain appliances; the Cool Cash program for central air conditioners, evaporative coolers and heat pumps; a heat-pump incentive tied to higher-efficiency units; and commercial lighting rebates that municipalities can use for businesses and facilities. Mackenzie noted many rebates require work or equipment to be new or installed within a 90-day window to be eligible.
Council members asked whether existing central air systems qualify and Mackenzie confirmed existing homes can apply if the unit was installed in the previous 90 days or is a replacement. She also said the program can provide advertising support — flyers, magnets and social posts — to help cities notify residents.
Council members discussed program uptake, potential additions (gas-furnace incentives) and how budgeted but unused member funds are returned at the end of the fiscal year. Staff indicated they would consider adding gas-furnace incentives and continue reviewing new product participation.
