The City of Indio Public Arts Commission on March 10 approved an ad hoc committee to review 26 artist proposals for murals at three park restroom sites.
Staff (Leila) told the commission it received 26 qualified proposals for work at Miles Avenue restroom, the Dr. Carrion restroom, and the North Jackson Park restroom. Staff offered three options for selection: hear all 26 in timed presentations, create an ad hoc committee to pare submissions to a shortlist, or have a staff panel narrow finalists before commission review.
Commissioners agreed the ad hoc committee model has worked for larger projects, balances commissioners’ time, and avoids creating a quorum of the full commission in the shortlisting phase. Vice Chair Neumeier moved for option 2; the motion passed and two commissioners volunteered to serve on the ad hoc committee. Staff said it could split artist presentations across two evenings to accommodate the schedule and will coordinate dates with volunteers.
Staff said the ad hoc panel should include two commissioners and staff; the commission may request an artist representative or community member as an advisor, but it is not required. Staff will provide all 26 applications and suggested next steps for scheduling and narrowing finalists before returning finalists’ recommendations to the full commission and, eventually, the City Council for approvals where required.
