The City of Parkland Community Advisory Board on March 2026 announced $18,500 in scholarship funding and set a timetable for reviewing 24 student applications.
Jackie Wehmeyer, senior director of strategy and intergovernmental affairs, told the board that “we have 7 $2,500 scholarships and 1 $1,000 scholarship” after outreach to community partners and the Chamber of Commerce. She said one donor identified in the record as “bin doctor” committed $2,500 and the Chamber contributed $1,000, bringing the total awards to $18,500.
The announcement followed staff outreach to local schools: applicants include Parkland residents who attend Robert Markham Elementary, Calvary Christian Academy, Pine Crest School, North Broward Preparatory, American Heritage, Pompano Beach High School and Saint Andrews School, Wehmeyer said. The board received 24 completed applications, “which is definitely more than we’ve gotten in the past year or two,” she added.
To manage scoring and interviews, board members agreed to divide responsibilities: a smaller panel will score all 24 applications and identify the top 12 for interviews, then an interview subpanel will conduct interviews across two days. Staff proposed sending application packets to reviewers on April 16, requiring returns by April 30, and scheduling interviews the week of April 20. Members volunteered to serve as application reviewers and on interview panels; staff will follow up with absent members to finalize the roster.
Board members emphasized avoiding conflicts that could disadvantage applicants. Wehmeyer said the interview questions were revised after input and that the current set includes five questions, keeping one consistent question used in previous cycles to allow comparison.
Next steps: staff will distribute review materials mid-April, compile scores, and schedule interviews. The board did not take any formal vote on scholarship distribution amounts during the meeting; the reported donors and timeline were presented by staff and affirmed by member volunteers.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.
