A training session for Nantucket Town Meeting presenters on effective delivery and question handling emphasized brevity, audience focus and preparation.
Trainers urged speakers to lead with the benefit to voters, use plain language and keep remarks to three to five minutes. “This is not the city of Boston. It’s Nantucket Island,” a presenter said, noting the importance of tailoring remarks to a small, closely engaged community.
Coaches demonstrated posture, purposeful gestures and eye contact techniques to hold audience attention, and advised speakers to use pauses to let numbers and key points sink in. Organizers described podium logistics for the actual meeting — who remains at the mic during Q&A, how department heads will be called to respond to factual points, and a plan to flag and correct misinformation during the floor debate.
The session included run‑throughs of mock article pitches and closed with an announcement that a full dress rehearsal will be held on April 9 at the high‑school auditorium to simulate the Town Meeting setup.
Organizers said the goal is to ensure presenters make clear, concrete cases that help voters understand why a warrant article is being proposed and what it will cost or provide.
