Committee staff summarized SB 11‑07 as a bill directing the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board to establish an alternative certification pathway for honorably discharged U.S. military veterans who served in military law‑enforcement roles.
"The bill allows eligible applicants to complete an abbreviated training program and accepts existing military police training and experience toward the certification requirements," staff said. Members sought clarification about whether the language would cover branch‑specific titles such as Army military police, Air Force security forces or Navy corpsmen performing similar roles.
Staff and another member explained that Department of Defense training models are used across branches for military law enforcement and that, as written, the bill is intended to cover those meeting DOD requirements. Representative Gillette said the bill does not change POST standards and that prior service would be recognized only as an abbreviated pathway, with background checks preserved.
The committee moved SB 11‑07 with a due‑pass recommendation after questions and brief debate. Members expressed both support for easing pathways for veterans and caution about ensuring disciplinary and cross‑jurisdictional checks remain intact.
The committee’s recommendation advances the measure to the next legislative stage for potential floor consideration.
