Senate adopts Bronx Day resolution and welcomes student civic delegation

The New York State Senate on March 9 adopted a resolution honoring Bronx Day and formally welcomed a 12th-grade civic-education delegation from Ahavas Viasiakoff in Rockland County.

Senator Fernandez, sponsor of the measure, told colleagues the resolution commemorates a revived Bronx Day celebration and highlighted the borough’s history and cultural contributions. "The Bronx is the single greatest borough in New York City," Fernandez said on the Senate floor, recounting local landmarks, music and community resilience. Senators Bailey, Serrano and others joined in tributes, noting Bronx achievements in music, fashion and public service. The secretary read the resolution’s title before Fernandez’s remarks and the Senate adopted the measure.

Senator Webb introduced the visiting students and recognized school leaders Shandy Eisenberg and Shmueli Hartstein seated in the gallery. Webb described the delegation’s work in civic education and advocacy, saying the students have met with dozens of elected officials and are learning how state and local government functions. The Senate extended the privileges and courtesies of the chamber to the group and invited them to rise for recognition.

The resolution and the recognition drew several additional brief floor remarks that emphasized the borough’s institutions, from the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden to local cultural movements such as hip hop. The session proceeded afterward to a series of calendar items and votes.

The resolution was adopted and the Senate moved on to other business.
