Board members on March 9 recognized the Harlem High School dance team for a season that culminated in a 13th-place finish at state, the highest finish the program has achieved.
Board member (speaker 7) introduced the recognition, noting the team’s performance at the Big Ten conference and at state and encouraging the public to view video of the team’s state performance online. The board thanked coaches and students for their commitment to technical skill and community engagement.
Coach Summer Henderson (speaker 8) summarized the season and emphasized the team’s progress: "We had a great year ... We came in thirteenth. That is the highest we've ever placed." Team members introduced themselves to the board by name and grade; assistant coach Chelsea Pura was also acknowledged.
Why it matters: public recognition at a board meeting highlights extracurricular achievement and the role such programs play in student development and community pride. Board members indicated plans to continue public recognition at future meetings and celebratory photos were taken.
The recognition closed with board congratulations and an invitation for a group photo; no formal action was required for this agenda item.
