Nags Head authorizes notice to proceed for 2026 beach nourishment project

The Nags Head Board of Commissioners authorized the town manager to issue a notice to proceed to Weeks Marine for the town’s 2026 beach nourishment contract.

Staff said the contractor’s preliminary schedule calls for construction and material staging between May and August. Before physical work begins, the town and contractor must complete pre‑construction steps including pipeline corridor clearing, a pre‑construction survey and an inter‑agency coordination meeting; staff told the board an inter‑agency reconstruction meeting was scheduled the following day.

Town staff said they would return in April with a more detailed public outreach plan and a full construction timeline to support communications with residents and businesses. Commissioners voted to authorize the town manager to proceed with contract administration and to direct staff to prepare briefings to be published before work begins.

The decision follows prior planning, permitting and financing work the town has been conducting to secure state and county support and to set aside local funds; staff noted funds available in a dedicated beach‑nourishment reserve and discussed financing options for the total project cost.

“Today’s action allows us to move from planning into implementation while we continue public outreach and monitoring,” a staff member said during the meeting.
