Trustee Carroll moved that the Ann Arbor Public Schools board adopt a resolution asking Michigan lawmakers to undo Fiscal Year 2025 cuts to mental‑health and school‑safety funding and reinstate those dollars; Trustee Mohammed seconded the motion. Supporters said the timing was urgent because the state House was scheduled to meet next week, while opponents said the board should craft its own language through the governance committee instead of adopting another body’s wording verbatim.
"This is a very important topic," Trustee Mohammed said, arguing the board could not simply keep deferring advocacy while committees remained inactive. "We need that money. If there's any way that as a board we can advocate for this strongly, I think it would send a strong message."
Trustee Schmidt questioned the process of taking resolutions from other bodies and bringing them to the board table without committee vetting. "Bringing up resolutions at the board table without having it go through a committee for discussion, review and discussion just does not seem to be proper," Schmidt said, arguing that stronger local statements should originate within the board.
Vice‑presidential and procedural concerns also factored into Trustees' positions; several members said they supported the substance of restoring mental‑health funding but balked at the way the item was introduced and at repeated past controversies over resolutions.
After extended discussion the board took a roll‑call vote. The motion to adopt the resolution failed on the board floor.
