County staff: 75% of paved roads rated satisfactory; commissioners discuss boosting drainage and maintenance

County staff presented a statewide-style pavement-management snapshot for Nassau County’s roughly 500 miles of paved, county-maintained roads: an independent assessment shows roughly three-quarters of those miles are in satisfactory condition or better.

Roads staff said the data are a snapshot in time and will be published after vetting; the evaluation will inform a five-year program that staff projects can be delivered on budget under current assumptions. The board heard a separate update on the double-chip-seal and enhanced-drainage programs, with staff reporting significant mileage of chip seal conversions to date and an ongoing focus on repairing vulnerabilities revealed by the 500-year storm.

Several commissioners said drainage and ditch maintenance are high priorities that protect private property and reduce future repair costs. “If you defer maintenance on your roads, it’s just going to cost you more to fix them later,” county manager (speaker 6) observed during the recap. Multiple commissioners singled out recent storm-response efforts and praised staff for rapid, coordinated action across districts.

No new tax was proposed at the workshop; staff said future budget scenarios will factor road and drainage funding alongside proposals for millage adjustments and program prioritization. The pavement-management results and recommended five-year project list will be published for public review once the data are finalized.
