The Homewood City Council voted unanimously March 9 to authorize the mayor to sign an intergovernmental agreement with Mountain Brook, Birmingham and Jefferson County for a multi‑phase bridge improvement project on Highway 280 near Hollywood Boulevard.
Councilor Armstead moved to approve the agreement and Councilor Simmons seconded; the resolution passed 5–0 and was recorded as Resolution 26‑24. The mayor emphasized the vote covered phase one, which is focused on sidewalk and pedestrian accessibility, and said Homewood will not make additional payments beyond a contribution made in 2018.
"This is phase 1. This will be the sidewalk," the mayor said, thanking council for the support and noting Mountain Brook was also voting on its portion of the agreement that night.
The agreement schedules coordination among the four jurisdictions for eventual comprehensive bridge construction. The council did not authorize new immediate expenditures by Homewood beyond previously made payments, according to the mayor’s remarks.
The council's decision sends the agreement forward for signature and allows interjurisdictional work to proceed on design and preliminary items for the pedestrian improvements.
