Council authorizes up to $1.03 million for Motorola radios and maintenance

The council authorized staff to pay Motorola Solutions up to $1,028,734 for radios, accessories, subscriptions and maintenance through July 31, 2027, using the Houston‑Galveston Area Council cooperative purchasing agreement.

Staff said reliable non‑cellular radio communications are essential for police, fire, dispatch, animal services and municipal court operations. "We utilize and maintain nearly 400 handheld and mobile radios across these functional areas," staff told the council, adding that the city participates in a consortium with other agencies and expects reimbursements of about $200,000.

Funding for the purchases is included in the Fire Department’s annual operating budget, staff said. The council moved, seconded and approved the authorization by unanimous vote.
