General Services Committee approves updated Jewett House alcohol policy allowing monitored beer and wine service

The General Services Committee on March 9 voted to recommend that city council adopt an updated alcohol policy for the Jewett House, clarifying when event hosts may provide alcohol and when a licensed vendor is required.

Adam Rous, Recreation Superintendent, explained the proposed revision as an alignment with current practice: "allowing weddings and big events to do their own alcohol service, if it's just beer and wine still monitored. And if they're doing any liquor or cocktails, it would need to be through a licensed vendor because there's security pieces and stuff that come with that," Rous said.

A committee member asked whether additional liability insurance would be needed for events; another staff member, identified in the transcript as Randy, replied that events already obtain liability insurance and that the policy language includes a disclaimer of city responsibility for damages and injuries resulting from alcohol service. "I think they already get liability insurance for events there," Randy said.

A committee member moved to approve the policy as presented; the motion was seconded and carried. The committee’s action forwards the policy recommendation to full council for final approval and implementation. The motion and discussion focused on clarifying monitoring requirements and ensuring the city is disclaimed from liability tied to alcohol service.
