Mount Clemens — The commission on May 4 approved motions to introduce two ordinances that update the city’s fire code references to currently published model codes.
The commission voted to approve first readings and set second readings for May 18 to adopt: an update from the 2006 edition to the 2012 edition of the International Fire Code, and an update replacing earlier BOCA references with the 2012 editions of NFPA 1 (Fire Prevention Code) and NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code).
Why staff proposed the change: City Manager Steve Brown explained the changes are primarily housekeeping to keep Mount Clemens’ local ordinances aligned with the editions the department uses for inspections and enforcement; the ordinance language was submitted by the city attorney and fire department staff.
Vote: Commissioners supported introduction and first reading; the items were characterized by members as routine updates to stay current with national model codes.
Next step: The commission set May 18 as the date for second reading and adoption; staff indicated Captain Greg Shipman of the fire department and the city attorney prepared the recommended language.
