A resident delivered an extended public comment to the Mount Clemens City Commission alleging selective enforcement of city ordinances and warned that inconsistent treatment of similar properties undermined ethical government.
David Schnur told the commission he was concerned about "selective enforcement" and cited a recent variance involving what he called the "Hills property," arguing that allowing one property to operate outside code set a precedent that could be difficult to deny to others. "The bottom line," Schnur said, "regardless of political threats made to me by the mayor ... I am entitled by the Constitution to an ethical government."
The mayor and other commissioners pushed back on aspects of Schnur’s account. The mayor said she had followed existing procedures and noted that she had been following practices used by previous mayors. A commissioner suggested that if paperwork or process questions exist staff would review them; another commissioner emphasized that leadership requires responding to factual errors in public comment.
Commissioners later noted they would follow up on specific administrative responses at a future meeting and that staff would provide updates about the outstanding property matter cited by Schnur. The commission did not take formal action on enforcement policy at this meeting.
