The Mount Clemens City Commission introduced and gave first reading to a new Planning Commission ordinance that would repeal the old 1958 city plan commission ordinance and align local rules with the state’s 2008 Planning Enabling Act.
City staff described the ordinance as largely reflective of the 2008 act and said it prescribes appointments, terms, membership (reducing the number of seats from nine to seven to improve quorum reliability) and the commission’s powers and duties. Commissioners asked whether any members would be compensated; staff said there is no current city commission resolution providing compensation, but the ordinance allows the commission to be reimbursed for expenses as provided by a city commission resolution.
Why it mattered: The change is intended to modernize local planning code to match state statute and to reduce the number of commission seats to address persistent difficulties filling vacancies, which can delay permit and planning approvals.
Procedure and next steps: The commission approved introduction and set the second reading and potential adoption for Oct. 2, 2017. Staff indicated documentation and the ordinance text are attached for review.
