Gunnison City Council voted unanimously March 4 to grant a conditional use permit for a proposed campground at 395 South Mesa, with conditions to complete technical reviews.
The applicants, who identified themselves to the council as Janet Hansen Haidt and a partner, described the proposal as "self contained" camping and told council members they expect roughly 45 stalls. City staff noted the application will need to complete the standard subdivision and building-permit review and may be required to address fire-protection infrastructure.
Mayor (speaker 2) said he was "in favor of the project" after staff synopsis and council discussion. Staff (Dennis, speaker 8) advised that technical-review committee requirements would determine any additional mitigation, including whether a fire hydrant or other water access would be required.
During discussion council members raised site-access issues tied to nearby ATV and mountain-bike trails and urged the applicants to consider alternate vehicle access if trailers are not street legal. Applicants confirmed the campsites were intended to be short-term and self-contained; staff will verify hookups and any dump-station plans during the permit review.
The mayor called for a motion; the council approved the permit by voice vote. Conditions were adopted as discussed on the record and the permit will proceed to the required administrative checks before implementation.
The council placed final technical approvals and required public-safety conditions with staff; applicants will return to staff processes for final permitting.
