A resident and multiple commissioners used the Oct. 1 Mount Clemens City Commission meeting to urge public participation in upcoming community events and to remind residents about the voter registration deadline ahead of the Nov. 6 election.
Ruthie Stevenson, a resident who identified her address as 69 Bain Street during public comment, told the commission the Mount Clemens Community Summit will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Emerald Theatre (9 a.m. to noon), with free parking and light refreshments, but that advanced registration is required at advancingmacomb.com/summit or by calling (586) 651‑0055. Stevenson asked residents to bring comments, ideas and questions to the summit.
During the city manager's report, staff listed several community events including the Mount Clemens High School homecoming parade on Oct. 5 (parade begins 4:30 p.m. from City Hall), the Columbus Day Parade on Oct. 6, and the Mount Clemens Fire Department open house on Oct. 14. The manager also noted nomination forms for the local treasurer award are available and listed a Dec. 17 deadline for submissions.
Commissioner Button and other commissioners reiterated the importance of registering to vote by Oct. 9 and noted a school millage renewal for the Mount Clemens schools will be on the Nov. 6 ballot; the renewal was described as a non‑homestead renewal (applies to businesses) and not a tax increase, and the speaker said it generates approximately $5,000,000 for the schools. The commissioner said they could discuss questions at the close of the meeting.
Commissioners also mentioned public‑art installations downtown and opportunities for community volunteering for the upcoming parade and sesquicentennial celebrations.
