Board narrows summer program and approves locally awarded verified-credit path for students

Administrators presented a summer-school plan that fits the division’s current allotment: a primarily half-day model for elementary, middle and high school students with site coordinators, special-education coverage and fewer instructional assistants than in recent pandemic years. Dr. McGinnis said instructional time is preserved; exploratory or extended-afternoon enrichment components were scaled back because of the funding level.

Board members pressed for more detail on reduced hours and potential equity impacts; administrators said they would return in April with scenarios that consider additional funding sources (including Title I and Medicaid-related reimbursements) to expand offerings.

Separately, the board approved use of a locally awarded verified-credit process (LAVC) the division has been preparing to implement for history courses. Staff said recent state flexibility allows a second locally awarded verified credit in history and that 11 current high-school seniors are ready to complete the performance task now and could graduate if the LAVC is implemented immediately. The board voted to approve launching the initiative and appoint the scoring committee, and administrators said they would proceed on the timeline to assist the identified students.

Next steps: administrators will return with additional summer-school scenarios and finalize the committee and timeline to award locally verified credits so eligible seniors may complete graduation requirements.
