On April 10 the Monroe County Board of Commissioners approved an immediate award to E and B Paving LLC for paving work on Ord Road and heard that the county received a full Community Crossings award of $1,500,000.
Miss Ridge presented quotes opened April 5 and recommended awarding the Ord Road paving project to E and B Paving LLC as the lowest responsive quote. The board approved using Motor Vehicle Highway fund number 1176 in the amount of $116,572 to award the contract; the motion passed 2–0. Commissioners asked operational questions about quarry truck access; Miss Ridge said paving limits apply from the quarry entrance west to Vernal Pike and trucks would still be able to exit the quarry to Route 48.
Miss Ridge then announced that the county’s Community Crossings application — which required a local match — was approved for the full $1,500,000 award. She said the county council had provided a local match of about $1,500,000 in the budget, allowing about $3,000,000 in projects; she listed roughly 26 miles of roads included in the award (Mount Pleasant Road, Monroe Dam Road, Valley Mission Road, Sewell Road, Rockport Road, Brummets Creek Road, Grama Creek Road, Popcorn Road, Vernal Pike, Chambers Pike, Zikes Road, Woodland Road, Oak Ridge Road, and the Shelburne Woods subdivision).
Miss Ridge emphasized the grant’s importance for public safety and said the department uses multiple funds and partners (including NDOT and the county council) to assemble matches and keep projects moving. She told the board bids had been held pending the Community Crossings awards; staff will present NDOT contracts and final recommendations for award and execution.
What’s next: Staff will bring the NDOT contract and the formal paving award documentation to the commissioners at the next meeting for final record and execution; the board approved the Ord Road award so work can begin next week.
