The Lake County Financial & Administrative Committee on March 5 approved a joint resolution to add two principal public defender positions to staff a newly consolidated domestic violence courtroom. The positions are expected to cost roughly $135,000 for the remainder of fiscal year 2026 and, according to staff, will be covered by existing budget savings from unfilled positions.
Committee members said they sought clarity about the broader fiscal impact on justice partners — including the clerk of the court and the sheriff’s office — before advancing the measure. Administration and the presenter said justice partners met and determined that the only additional staffing need identified at that meeting was a request from the state’s attorney’s office for a victim specialist; other partners have capacity to support the courtroom. The state’s attorney request was described as separate and on the consent agenda.
A member asked whether the positions would roll into the FY2027 budget; staff said the County will carry the costs forward and plan to include them in next year’s budget. The committee approved the measure by voice vote.
Next steps: the positions will be filled over the coming months, with one projection that hiring would likely take a month or two before the new courtroom opens.
