WORCESTER — At its March 5 meeting the Worcester School Committee approved several routine and follow-up items, including a small grant for gardening, committee reports and a referral of two open‑meeting‑law complaints to the City legal department.
Grant approval: The committee approved a $3,000 grant from the Toshiba American Foundation to support a school gardening project at the district’s Challenge and Reach program. The chair called for a roll-call vote and members voted in favor. Member Bien Caria commented that the gardening program could connect students to community resources such as Green Hill Park.
Accountability reports: The committee voted to approve and file two related general-business items requesting a detailed administration report on how the district will respond to newly released MCAS results and a report on school accountability measures (four-year cohort graduation rate, chronic absenteeism, extended engagement rate and advanced coursework completion). Members discussed causes for lower scores among some groups, including language development, attendance and early-literacy gaps; Superintendent Allen and Dr. Morse said the district is emphasizing high-quality instructional materials, consistent tier 1 instruction and targeted tier 2/3 supports.
Executive-session follow-up: Pursuant to action taken in executive session, the committee voted to refer open‑meeting‑law complaints filed by Robert Contois and Ashlyn Doyle to the City of Worcester legal department for response. The motion passed on a roll-call vote; Member Mailman recorded an abstention.
Other routine items: The committee approved the finance committee's standing report and took a roll-call vote on the consent agenda earlier in the meeting. The mayor's item regarding graduation dates was held pending further calendar checks and additional information from administration.
The committee adjourned shortly after the referrals and the hold on the mayor's item.
