During the ASBA-led retreat, trustees singled out facilities and long-range planning as an area where policy and procedure could reduce surprise and improve community trust. One trustee said the recent cycle illustrated "the importance of not pushing things off until they are dire and emergent," urging a more proactive process.
Board members noted the district has a 10-year master plan but expressed concern that presentations and YouTube postings alone leave many community members unaware of impending changes. The group discussed embedding regular, accessible reporting and possibly setting explicit thresholds or review triggers so the public knows when the board will actively revisit consolidation or closure decisions.
An example offered during the discussion — as an illustration rather than a settled proposal — was to identify an enrollment threshold that would prompt formal board consideration. A trustee described seeing other districts publish a numeric threshold so the public can anticipate discussions.
No motion or vote was taken; the board instead asked staff and board leadership to consider making facilities policy and related procedures a board goal or joint board-superintendent work item to bring back for discussion.
