As the retreat moved from reviewing the ASBA evaluation to action planning, the facilitator recommended trustees set a concise number of board goals for the year (no more than three) to ensure focus and follow-through. Trustees discussed potential themes—communication, onboarding/mentoring, advocacy framework and school consolidation/reporting—and how some topics overlap.
Board president Trina Nelson and staff agreed to produce draft goal language ahead of the next board meeting. A target was stated for a draft to be available for discussion at a March meeting (speakers referenced March 20 and March 24 as possible dates).
Facilitator guidance and trustee comments emphasized framing board goals to show how they support students and staff, keeping the board’s role in governance distinct from operational implementation by administration. The board did not adopt any goals at the retreat; members asked staff and board leadership to return with drafts for discussion and prioritization.
