The Washington State Senate adopted Senate Resolution 8,697 recognizing the 40th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity Seattle, King and Kittitas Counties and the organization’s contributions to affordable homeownership.
Sen. Alvarado introduced the resolution, noting Habitat’s use of public resources, philanthropic support and volunteer "sweat equity" to deliver permanently affordable homes at roughly half market value and citing the organization’s regional impact. "Habitat is building the homes our constituents need in communities across the state," Alvarado said on the floor.
Several senators rose to voice support and to recount personal volunteer experiences. Sen. Warnock described visiting Habitat projects in Ellensburg and watching new homes become cohesive neighborhoods; Sen. Saldana recalled volunteering during a college spring break and emphasized the skill-building and community benefits of sweat equity. Sen. Wagner highlighted ownership and high-school partnerships that gave students math and carpentry experience.
After remarks, the presiding officer called for adoption; senators signified by voice and the resolution was adopted. The presiding officer then recognized Habitat representatives in the gallery, including Brett D’Antonio (CEO), Christina Starr (Chief Communications and Marketing Officer) and Ryan Donahue (Chief Advocacy Officer).
