Board adopts dress-code tweaks: adds Friday detention option and allows “approximate” knee-length shorts

Beauregard Parish School Board members adopted two discipline and dress-code recommendations on March 5 after a committee review.

A committee representative asked the board to approve adding Friday as an option alongside Saturday detention to reflect the district calendar and ensure consistent consequence options when students do not attend school on Saturdays. The board approved the change on a voice vote.

The committee also recommended adding the word “approximate” before the walking-shorts knee-length requirement to address concerns that families and administrators have difficulty sourcing consistently measured knee-length shorts—particularly for boys. A committee member explained that the change is intended to leave measurement to administrators’ discretion rather than requiring literal ruler measurement. The board approved that revision on a voice vote.

A brief discussion followed about districtwide variation in shorts availability and administrative discretion. One board participant summarized the committee’s intent: "We just set approximate and leave that to the discretion of the administrator."

Next steps: policy language will be updated to reflect the committee recommendations and the district will implement the revised language in its student handbook and communications.
