A resident raised a curriculum concern at a prior meeting about alleged extended daily computer use for the I-Ready math program. Superintendent Doctor Detorno reported on March 4 that staff ran usage reports for middle-school classes and found the program is being used within the provider’s criteria: students complete two lessons on average, which equates to roughly 30–35 minutes per week rather than prolonged daily sessions.
"At this point, they're meeting the criteria of I-Ready, which means that the kids complete two lessons now," Detorno said. He explained that completing two lessons averages about 30 minutes for the week and that some teachers break the program into short pieces across several days or use it as a station for 15–20 minutes on a single day. The superintendent said the district will continue to run usage reports as part of an ongoing process to ensure fidelity and to avoid overuse of the program.
Board members asked clarifying questions about how the minutes are distributed during the week and were told the implementation varies by teacher. The superintendent said the district will coordinate with building administration to monitor the program and address concerns raised by parents.
Why it matters: The exchange addresses parental concerns about instructional time and technology use; the district reported the program is currently used in brief segments that meet the vendor’s usage criteria and pledged ongoing monitoring.
