Subcommittee sends draft policy on retiring school buildings to full committee for first reading

The policy subcommittee met March 3 and agreed to forward a revised FCB policy on retirement of facilities to the full school committee for its first reading.

The Chair said she shortened and reframed language to be more factual, stressing that retiring a school should not be a quick decision except when safety requires immediate action, and that budgetary considerations must be balanced against long-range planning. Committee members discussed ensuring community input and a clear evaluation process when the superintendent recommends a building for retirement.

A committee member moved to send FCB to the full committee for a first reading; the motion was seconded and approved unanimously. Members asked staff to ensure the process allows the committee to request specific evaluation information from the administration if a retirement is proposed.

Next steps: the FCB draft will appear on the full committee agenda for a first reading and further public discussion.
