Farm Summit organizers report $16,000 raised and plans for regional farm markets

Jennifer Kuebler provided the Salem County Board with an update on the Farm Summit and related initiatives, saying organizers raised over $16,000 from private and corporate sponsors and attracted roughly 160 attendees to the inaugural event.

Kuebler said the initiative aims to ‘‘bring the market’’—creating a South Jersey table to connect restaurants directly with farmers so local purchases stay in the region. She said two community farm-market locations are confirmed for a May kickoff and organizers have inquiries for additional sites across three counties.

On the micro level, Kuebler described a plan to remap farm stands in neighborhoods and share the map across the Tri-County area; last summer’s mapping covered Salem County only. She also said an advisory committee is working on regulatory and infrastructure solutions and that the group plans workshops to help small producers navigate butchering and distribution rules that currently challenge local sales.

Kuebler thanked commissioners who supported the summit’s organization and follow-up work. Commissioners responded with thanks and indicated willingness to discuss regulatory sessions and further follow-up.
