The Hampton City School Board on March 4 publicly recognized Coach Craig Brion for 30 seasons leading Bethel High School boys basketball.
Board members and administrators praised Brion's record, leadership and impact on students. The presentation noted career milestones (437'11 record cited in the presentation) and postseason successes. Brion accepted a plaque and a commemorative coin from Hampton City Schools and thanked administrators, colleagues, students and family who attended the meeting.
Brion described recent health challenges and the decision to step away from coaching. "This last time, 11 months ago, I had stage 4 cancer again. Went through this chemo for 8 months. They removed half of my lung," he said, thanking staff and family for support. He said he will serve one more year in the dean'office and then retire, and that he intends to continue supporting students and the athletic program.
Board members who spoke during the recognition highlighted personal impacts on students and the community and wished Brion well in retirement. The board's recognition concluded with applause and formal thanks from the chair.
The recognition was presented near the start of the meeting and was recorded in the board packet of recognitions for the evening.
