A visually impaired committee member told the Town of Needham Human Rights Committee that the town email/newsletter is hard to navigate with a screen reader because it lacks clear headings and jump links. The member said the message often contains many items and that reading line-by-line takes 30–45 minutes; they proposed simple fixes such as structural headings and descriptions on images to make the newsletter accessible.
Committee members agreed to connect the member with the town’s director of communications and community engagement to discuss improvements. One committee member said, “I’m gonna put you in touch, Pardis, with our director of communication and community engagement. She does the newsletter,” and offered to forward resources and checklists.
The committee also discussed a recently passed law requiring digital accessibility updates for municipal websites: the speaker noted that communities over 50,000 residents are already subject to standards (effective 2026) and that Needham (under 50,000) will face a compliance deadline around 2027. Members described the upgrade as achievable and flagged it as an item for future coordination with town staff.
The committee recommended adding accessibility concerns to minutes and following up with the communications director to implement straightforward changes (headings, alt-text and structural navigation) and to review the town’s timeline for compliance with the new law.
