SD U-46 breaks ground on roughly $30 million Glenbrook Elementary overhaul in Streamwood

At a ceremonial groundbreaking, SD U-46 presenters said the district is beginning a major renovation of Glenbrook Elementary in Streamwood that officials estimate will cost approximately $30,000,000 and include 35,000 square feet of interior renovations plus an approximately 14,000-square-foot addition.

A SD U-46 presenter said, "Today marks the first school improvement project under U-46 in Streamwood," framing the ceremony as the start of a multi-year effort to modernize learning spaces.

The presenter described problems stemming from Glenbrook's original open-concept design from the early 1970s, saying classrooms are arranged around a central media center with limited hallways that create circulation, disruption, safety and natural-light challenges.

Agency officials said the renovation will add instructional and collaboration spaces and a modern, secure front vestibule to streamline visitor processing and support front office operations. They said mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will be upgraded to improve comfort, energy efficiency and sustainability; one presenter said, "we'll be doing, geothermal energy here, which is very exciting."

The district also plans a new interior courtyard to bring natural light into the building and dedicated preschool classrooms with a gross-motor play area to expand access for early learners in the neighborhood.

To avoid classroom disruptions during construction, the presenters said students and staff will temporarily relocate to Hanover Countryside Elementary, which the district will use as a transition site next year. The presenters said this move is intended to provide a safe and stable instructional environment while work occurs on the Glenbrook campus.

SD U-46 officials gave an anticipated timeline for completion and said students and staff are expected to return to the renovated Glenbrook in August 2027. Agency officials closed the ceremony noting that while the symbolic turning of dirt marks the start, construction and interim logistics will follow in coming months.

The district did not provide a detailed funding breakdown, procurement schedule or construction timeline beyond the target reopening date; officials described the $30 million figure as an estimate.
