Irondale — Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. presented a commemorative plaque for Reverend James Philip Parnell Sr. at the March 2 Irondale City Council meeting, calling Parnell one of the city’s "forgotten architects" of Black history and inviting the pastor’s family to the podium.
Reading from the plaque, the mayor said the honor recognizes Parnell’s long service at Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church and his work with civil-rights organizations. The plaque text included the phrase: "forgotten architects of black history, reverend James Philip Parnell senior, faith leader and community shepherd, honoring his dedicated service at Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, the oldest African American congregation in the city of Irondale, presented by mayor James D. Stewart junior, 02/17/2026."
A family member, speaking at the podium, said it was humbling for the city to remember him after 17 years and thanked the council for the recognition. Mayor Stewart also announced plans for a sign unveiling honoring Parnell around Father’s Day; timing may be adjusted based on family availability.
Why it matters: The council’s recognition preserves local history and acknowledges Parnell’s multi‑generational influence in Irondale congregation life and civic engagement.
What’s next: The city will schedule a formal sign unveiling; family members and the council indicated a public photo opportunity and community celebration will follow.
